Dr. Bin (Benjamin) Zhu
Researcher

Internet Media Group
Microsoft Research Asia

Dr. Bin B. Zhu joined Microsoft Research, Asia as a Researcher in December 2001. Before that, he had worked for more than four years as a Lead Scientist at Cognicity Inc., a company he co-founded with his dissertation advisor and a colleague in 1997. Where at Cognicity, he played a key role in the research of the company's core technologies, and was in charge of the development and implementation of all watermark related products. He nurtured several pioneer and leading products in the areas of audio watermarking, electronic music promotion and one-to-one marketing.

Dr. Zhu is a senior member of IEEE. He has published two book chapters and over thirty peer-reviewed papers in leading journals and conferences in the areas of multimedia encryption, watermarking, and authentication, digital rights management, data and image compression, multimedia processing and systems. He has been awarded seven US patents. He had also published nine peer-reviewed journal papers on condensed matter physics before he jumped into signal processing and communications. His current research interests include scalable multimedia encryption, authentication, and protection; multimedia networking and systems; digital rights management, network and system security; multimedia watermarking, compression, and processing.

Dr. Zhu received his B.S. degree in physics from the University of Science and Technology of China in 1986, and M.S. and Ph. D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Minnesota in Sept. 1993 and Dec. 1998, respectively.
