网络图形组的研究领域主要集中在图形系统、图形平台以及游戏技术几个方面。网络图形组利用其图形研究方面广泛的专业知识来创建前沿的图形技术,包括微软的图形系统和平台以及DirectX和XDK游戏平台。在游戏技术的开发方面,组里的研究员正和微软图形工作室密切合作共同研究下一代的游戏引擎。
通用位移贴图(GDM)
在计算机图形领域,通常用一张三维网格来表示真实世界的物体或外观。然而,目前的硬件和软件不能有效地表达物体表面的细节。针对这个问题, 一个解决方案是位移贴图,它可以在网格模型的基础上增加细节,但是不能应用于非高度场的情形。 网络图形组开发的通用位移贴图技术可以利用硬件加速高效地绘制复杂表面细节,达到实时帧率,并且视觉效果更佳。
Gamma-ton-模拟真实世界物体的风蚀旧化效果
向虚拟场景添加风蚀旧化效果,例如覆尘、锈斑、裂纹以及刮痕等,对增强图形的真实感而言是非常重要和关键的一步。网络图形组开发了一个新技术可以真实高效地绘制多种风蚀旧化现象,该技术称为Gamma-ton跟踪。该技术类似于光子跟踪技术,通过跟踪大量的一种叫做Gamma-ton的衰变粒子并存储Gamma-ton携带的信息来模拟风蚀旧化效果。Gamma-ton跟踪允许场景几何的定制和风化源的修整。现有技术面临的主要障碍在于对风蚀旧化效果的建模,而利用Gamma-ton跟踪,这些障碍可以很容易地被克服,从而实现包括整体的风蚀传播效果和污损的扩散等。Gamma-ton跟踪还能进行复杂的多重旧化效果的模拟,它不但能产生包含纹理变化的风蚀旧化效果,而且能够模拟在大尺度的几何形状上发生的变化。
纹理蒙太奇
对一个三维网格贴纹理是提高图形真实感的一种重要方法。计算机图形学领域的挑战是如何将二维图像映射到真实世界的三维模型上。 纹理蒙太奇是一个直观的用户工具,它让用户很容易地将模型和图像联系起来。该工具可以无缝地对齐纹理特征,并且用手工轻易地把没有覆盖的部分上色。结果可以把图像的变形最小化,并且在不同的纹理块的边界上保证平滑的过渡。
阴影场(Shadow Field)-实时软阴影的绘制技术
在全局光照明下对动态物体加入阴影对计算机图形学领域而言是一项挑战。利用网络图形组开发的阴影场技术,通过预计算一个物体周围所有点的阴影,可以有效地获得物体投射阴影的情况。利用这项技术,低频或者软阴影效果可以实时地应用于动态场景,而全频或者硬阴影效果和投射的阴影细节可以交互地应用于动态场景。
